The Difference Between “Fine” and Great
When speaking about wired Earphones
The First Sample Was Bad
We got our first real AUDR samples a few weeks ago.
Honestly, the unboxing was exciting for about 5 minutes.
Then reality hit.
The sound was good, but not extra special.
The mic quality was just awful.
One side had slightly stronger bass than the other.
The cable made noise when it rubbed against clothes while walking.
But wearing them for 3 hours straight, they still felt comfortable.
So some parts were a good starting point for V2 and other parts had to be completely restarted.
Because the last thing we wanted with our earphones was the feeling of: “Yeah they’re fine.” And we don’t want to build fine.. We want to build something that makes people instantly feel the difference.
A lot of people think (me included) wired earphones are easy to build, because they’ve existed forever. But making a pair that actually feels premium every day is much harder than we expected.
Tiny details completely change the experience.
The angle of the ear tip.
The texture of the cable.
The noise isolation quality.
How heavy the inline mic feels.
How voices sound in a noisy café.
How your ears feel after an hour.
You notice everything.
So we spent the next few weeks testing them everywhere.
Walking outside, an calls, at cafés, on the train, in the plane, plugged into laptops and phones, doing exercise. And more. We also gave pairs to 10 friends and asked them to do the same and be brutally honest.
Turns out the samples were okay for a solid start.
But now we’re even more excited for V2...
